Emerald is a rare, beautiful, and highly sought-after precious gemstone belonging to the beryl mineral family and distinguished by its beautiful green color. An emerald is best valued for good transparency, as transparency is an important characteristic of this gemstone. A well-saturated green color is essential for an emerald to qualify for the premium category, along with fewer inclusions and good to excellent brilliance. Emeralds can have blue or golden (yellowish) overtones; very slight overtones may be considered desirable, while excessive overtones reduce the value of the emerald.
Emeralds with poor transparency, including semi-transparent, translucent, or excessively dull and milky stones are not considered to be of fine gemstone quality. Fissures and inclusions should also be minimal, as a higher degree of these characteristics can significantly reduce an emerald’s value.
At Jewelfields, we offer certified loose cut and polished emerald gemstones from all major origins of Zambian, Nigeria, Colombia, Panjshir, Swat, Ethiopia, Russia etc. Stones are selected on the basis of a clean-looking face-up appearance, good brilliance, proper transparency (semi transparent to transparent), proper shape, and proper green color stones at rational business prices. We also sell fine quality emeralds with no oil to minor oil grades.

Jewelfields work is basically based on the quality and looks of the gemstone rather than just the name of origin. Though on availability we work in Colombian (USA), Swat stones from Pakistan and Afghanistan (Panjshir) origin stones, Ethiopian, and Nigerian stones other than Zambian, which is our specialty.
A finished translucent emerald price can start from $5/carat and goes beyond $5000 per carat for premium quality stones with top clarity, transparency, brilliance and color.
The quality factors include its transparency, clarity, color, carat weight, brilliance, treatments and cut-polish quality.
The origin is another hyped element determining the worth of the gem. Sometimes due to characteristics and sometimes as a brand name like emerald stone from Colombia or Panjshir are considered superior than those from Ethiopia. Emeralds from Zambia in good color are also expensive as these are strongly bonded stones with deep saturated colors and bright transparency.
Clarity is how a gem looks from inside and on the surface due to the presence or absence of inclusions. Natural emeralds do come with a lot of inclusions like fissures, liquids, clouds, traces of other minerals, black carbon, mica and immature crystals of themselves. These affect the clarity and transparency of the stone. The bright, transparent gem will always be most desired by anyone and will be costly.
Emerald is known for its bright rich green color, the color of nature we see. So the value of the emerald much depends on how green and lively the color is appearing in the gem. A well-balanced, saturated green color that is vivid in nature (not too dark or too light) is best for emeralds. The colors can be deep, light, medium, dark or soft in intensities and a well saturated color with no color zoning effect is considered better; such stones will be expensive, and those with very light colors will be inexpensive.
Luster is a property of any lapidary (rough) emerald; skilled cutting and polishing accentuates it. An emerald should be well balanced in dimensions, that is, with not too much height and not too little, with good symmetry in facets and proportions of the crown, table etc., that is how it will attract value.
Almost all the emeralds have surface reaching fissures / cracks which may be visible by eyes or may not be. Oiling with colorless oil and resin (natural resin oil) is done on emeralds to fill these micro gaps and to make them look more uniform throughout their bodies. This is a common trade practice to enhance these gems and is commonly accepted and is reversible.
Oiling in certification has 3 to 4 levels; which starts with insignificant, F1 minor, F2 moderate, and F3 significant. Significantly oiled emeralds have bigger inner fissures or cracks, and they dry easily to show up the fissures, cracks, and white patches, so try to go for either insignificant oil or F1 (minor) and F2 (moderate) grade enhanced emeralds.
Due to the fact that oil dries up in a significant emeralds in less time revealing the fissures, minor resin is a better option, giving the same effect to the stone and is durable.
The emeralds with resin filling are lower in price than regular oil. Emeralds which are real minor oil emeralds remain intact forever and are naturally very clean, so they command high prices in the market.
A properly shaped emerald would look appealing compared to uneven shaped stone. And cut proportions gives equal value to the gem. A very shallow cut stone is a kind of rejection and is too vulnerable to be made into a jewelry, also it doesn't looks good. So cut and shape requires to be proper for emeralds.
Most desired cut in emerald is octagon step cut (emerald cut). Other cut and shapes include pear, oval, cushion, cabochons, sugar loaf, princess, etc.
Basically, quality makes the price and origin is like a brand for emeralds and other gemstones.
Colombian or Panjshir emerald demands premium per carat prices, but only if bright, transparent with top color and clarity.
Zambian mines in South Africa are producing a lot of stone with catchy slight bluish green color and top clarity. Now from recent times top quality Zambian emeralds are almost equal in the rates to fine Colombian emeralds.
Even Russian and Ethiopian mines have given big-size top soft green-colored gem-quality stones equal to those of Muzo mines in Colombia, but Colombian emeralds have been always publicized much, so the buyers easily pay more for them in the same quality.
The buyers are becoming more informed about the publicity practices done in the past for the promotion of any particular origin and they have started to emphasize more on the characteristics that compose the quality and look of emeralds.
If the gemstone is in a matching pair or calibrated parcel with the same color, cut and size, then those are rarer to be found and are pricey. The calibrated emeralds have easy demanded use in all jewelry pieces. A single stone can be used just as an emerald pendent or in an emerald ring but cannot make designs like necklace or bracelet. Calibrated stones make arranged designs, settings, layouts etc. in the jewelry.
A jewelry design would need a matching pair of emeralds or calibrated size lot to create a design, same applies for other jewelry types like bangles, tiara, brooches, etc.
