Colombian Emerald Gemstone

Emeralds mined in Colombia, USA, are considered the most valued and sought after of all the other origin emerald gemstones because they are the longest-matured crystal with the finest green color transparency. Colombia, located in South America, is a pioneer in the production of quality emeralds for the world market.

Muzo and Chivor Emeralds of Colombia

Colombian emeralds are the oldest deposits of emeralds in the world discovered so far. The Muzo emerald mines and the Chivor emerald mines have produced the most hard and shiny stones so far, and now the stones from that region are considered a very precious gem. As the stone is fully crystallized or matured, they are harder and have fewer fissures (hollow spaces) compared to other origin emeralds; due to this, the emerald does not usually dry up quickly.

They are popular for their pure, shiny green color and brilliance. Comparatively, these have better color, clarity, and luster/shine compared to their counterpart mined emerald gemstones, such as Zambian, which have more bluish tones, or Russian stones, which are light in color shade overall.

All Colombian mined emeralds are not necessarily premium in quality but are also found in economic commercial qualities.

Colombian Emerald Price

The worth of a Colombian emerald can be $10/ct to over $200/ct depending on the below-mentioned factors of cut-polish, color, clarity, and carat weight.

Clarity: the clearer and cleaner-looking the gem stone is, the more it will be valued, so fewer cracks and fissures with fewer inclusions as they make the stones cheaper. The common inclusions in these emeralds are cavities containing gas bubbles and liquids. Also, rock salt crystals are packed as inclusions appearing as calcite rhombus single-single spikes and pyrite crystals.
Color: with the amount and evenness in the spread of color, which should be vivid, i.e., not too dark and not too light, with no appearing color zoning. Generally the color in Colombian emeralds comes lighter, which is not good. The color of a valuable stone mined here should be deeper and with a tint of bluish in it.
Carat Weight, Treatment, and Cut: The bigger the stone is in size with these above criteria, the more rare it will be and thus more valuable. The common accepted treatments are oiling, which is reversible, and resin filling; resin-filled emeralds stand second in valuations. Minor or no-oil ones are considered best in quality and remain the same with time, as even if oil dries out, the stone will not turn patchy. Then comes if the stone is faceted or cabochon cut and symmetry, i.e., adequate proportions and quality in cut, the polish on stone, which highly affects the appearance. There should be no scratches on the surface or open cracks.
The mines the emerald belongs to in Colombia affect the pricing, like the lapidary (raw stone) from the old mines of Muzo and Chivor have more demand, so higher rates. The amount of oil in fractures or the presence of fissures is also a significator of quality and thus price.
Transparency and Brilliance: Only transparent to semi-translucent stones are considered gems, and translucent or opaque has minimum value. The stone needs to be transparent with a shine that is a natural property of rough stone and can be enhanced with cutting skills.
Other factors include the shapes, like an emerald cut emerald (octagon step cut) is always demanded over a round or oval shape.
Treated or untreated emeralds: Oiling is a commonly accepted practice. The inner cracks and fissures in an emerald make it look much more included and dirty. White patches are seen or clusters of bubbles when there are empty colorless fissures in the stones, so oil gets absorbed in those spaces easily, making the fissures and patches disappear temporarily, but once the oil dries up, emerald comes in its original form, and sometimes significant detioration in quality is seen. Now if an emerald has fewer inner fissures and cracks, it will be a minor or no oil emerald as it has less scope or hollow space to absorb oil, and thus those are more durable and better in quality than emerald whose clarity is altered with a significant amount of oil.

Colombian Emerald Mines

Major mining regions in Colombia are the eastern regions of the Andes mountain range between Cundinamarca and Boyaca. Chivor, Coscuez, and Muzo are the most popular emerald mining regions; others include La Pita and Penas Blancas. These pits are both government-owned and private, and from these mines comes the finest premium quality of emerald. All the mines show a slight difference in the characteristics of stones produced due to geographical differences, which are differences in color shade, hue clarity, luster, and brightness, and most important is the type of inclusions present. So in Colombian origin emeralds, identifying differences on the basis of mines needs a lot of expertise, and only a few experienced people who are from long in the trade and manufacturing can recognize it.

The GIA, IGI, GRS, or Gubelin Swiss Lab gives the origin certificate, which is based just on the origin country and almost does not mention the name of the mines, so ask your Colombian emerald suppliers if they can tell.
