Neelam or blue sapphire, is one of the most precious gemstones adorned by rulers in history to deities in mythology.
The stone is the blue colour in the corundam mineral family. The pure blue color in top clarity sapphires is rare and those pieces are very expensive if they are in big sizes.
The presence of titanium and iron gives the beautiful blue color to the gem stone. It is also the hardest color gemstone and just after diamond, with a hardness of 9 on the Moh scale.
The color of blue sapphire ranges from pure deep blue, cornflower blue, which is considered the best color in sapphire gemstones for which Kashmir (Jammu mines in India) was famous, to a slight greyish blue to pure sky blue and lighter shades.
The blue sapphire generally comes with heat treatment (thermal process), which is a minor and accepted process, like emeralds have oiling, which affects emeralds slightly, so is heating. The heated blue sapphires remain intact with their color, unlike heated yellow sapphires, which most often return to their originality once in contact with natural sunlight or artificial light.
This heat treatment in blue sapphire makes the stone slightly smooth by making colour saturation more even. The price difference does come, but not too much.
This is a kind of significant modification to the blue sapphire, making all the spaces pressure filled in high temperature with liquid beryllium, which is a glass-like substance, and the color is significantly modified. Secondly, the stone does not remain fully natural as some other material is inside the stone now to make it look higher quality. These sapphires are cheap in price.
The above 2 are the popular treatments in blue sapphire.
The blue sapphire gemstone is mined across the globe and thus has various regional characteristics.
Madagascar in Africa is one of the largest producers of sapphire stone. Other than blue sapphire, quality green, yellow and pink sapphires are also produced here. This island region in the Indian Ocean is renowned for giving top exclusive quality blue sapphires. The mining is generally owned by French and Swiss nationals. Almost all the blue sapphire rough and other sapphire mined here is exported the world over.
Sri Lanka also produces a large amount of blue sapphires, which are of high quality, though the Madagascar mines also produce similar quality sapphires as those from Ceylon, as the crystal structure of the gems from both these regions is quite similar, but Ceylonese sapphires rank overall higher in brilliance, color and development of crystal.
These come more with cracks and fissures. The Burmese crystal is brittle and lacks shine overall, as most of the blue sapphire from Burma now in Maynmar is more filled with fissures.
The most expensive and beautiful blue sapphires ever found were from this region of North India.
These stones build their name in history for the mesmerizing deep velvet cornflower blue color and excellent brilliance. The mines started producing the treasure stone in 1889 and were closed by 1905. Just not the color and clarity, but these blue sapphires have a historic value of name as well as, from the last century, almost no stones were found there.
