Padparadscha Sapphire

Padparadscha sapphire gemstone

As with other sapphirs, this also comes from the corundum mineral family. This has a unique colour combination of pink and orange 🩷 🧡 in the same stone, which is pinkish orange or orangey pink, which should be in a low to medium colour tone. According to GRS grading standards, a padparadscha sapphire gemstone should be in medium-weak to medium-strong colour saturations only and not in strong colour saturation; otherwise, they would fall in the category of orange or pink fancy sapphires. These gems can be from any origin; just the color tone has to match the above described standards.

Padparadscha sapphire demand and prices are rising substantially in past years due to its rarity and uniqueness. GRS has further divided them into 2 categories depending on the colour, which is sunset and sunrise padparadscha sapphire.

Sunset and sunrise padparadscha sapphire

These are the terms given by the GRS lab to these stones. Some times the labs were not agreeing with the gem dealers and customers or other labs for whether the sapphire stone is padparadscha sapphire or a fancy color sapphire, so GRS bought in clarity with certifications of color, especially for those stones where the secondary color is less clearly visible. Even SSEF adopts the same grading standards as GRS, but GIA sometimes disagrees.

Sunrise padparadscha sapphire

In those stones with a medium to weak color saturation, which have a more dominant color as pink 🩷 and the modifying color is orange, they are called Sunrise padparadscha sapphires, but sometimes the GIA may term it as a pink sapphire as they do not count the underlying tone, though it may be affecting the previous dominant color significantly. But if the color saturation is deep, then it is not a padparadscha but a fancy sapphire.

Sunset padparadscha sapphire

The sapphire where the dominating color is orange 🧡 which is modified by pink color's proper saturation within this color or as scattered saturation in zones is a sunset padparadscha sapphire. These also, as sunrises, should be in medium-deep, medium and light color saturations only.
