Color
Ruby is known for red color. The ruby may have very slight secondary color tone of purple, pink or orange and it may enhance the stone distinctively sometimes as happens in most desired pigeon blood red. But if overtones are too much they significantly degrade the value.
Transparency, inclusions and luster
Ruby will hold value only if it is semi- transparent and above, and transparent rubies with minimum cracks, good clarity and brilliance will only be amongst the high per carat rubies. The transparency in good clarity is what makes any gemstone appealing. The amount of clouds and inclusions affects the price. Sometimes a more transparent looking ruby is too much foggy and dull with no shine and looks bad in front of a more inclusive ruby which is semi transparent but has shine.
So this affects the per carat price of rubies as what type of inclusion is there and how it is affecting the stone. Even a small inclusion sitting over the table in the center of a transparent clean ruby may ruin the stone totally.
Big vulnerable cracks make the ruby a crap, also the opaque and semi-translucent rubies are found in abundance and are cheap.
Origin
The origin of a ruby can also influence its market value. Rubies from renowned sources such as Myanmar, Mozambique, and Sri Lanka may carry an additional premium because of their history, reputation, and availability. However, origin alone does not determine the true value of a gemstone and it is more a marketing strategy and a delusion. Treatment status, especially whether a ruby is heated or unheated, can also significantly affect its value. Note: Glass filled or borex lead filled rubies are equalto synthetic rubies and are crap. Also same is with hard opaque stones.
Face-up appearance
The face-up look is very important, how the inclusion pattern, table smoothness and clarity, shine, shape etc. is affecting the gemstone decides the price. Even if the ruby is slightly included but those inclusions come over the center of the table like black or white spots, dense cluster of clouds etc. make the stone look unwanted and cheap; but inclusions in small fragments on sides settles up the appearance.
Cut and shape
Cut is the type of facets or cutting style of the gem proper cut ruby will show up better in light, luster, appearance, and usability. The dimensions should be proper with proper durable height. Shape is the outer lining and a better to perfect shape will always look better.
In high grade rubies even inappropriate shaped are accepted but the cut should not be too shallow.
Faceted rubies are usually more in rates than the cabochons, or carvings.
Carat size
A smaller ruby stone such as below or around 1 carat is more easy to be found in good quality and naturally small can be made from any big piece. Suppose if the size is 3 carat the probability of clean stone in that weight drops significantly. So bigger in same or even sime less quality will be more expensive.
