Sapphire is a precious gemstone hailing from the corundum mineral family, coming in various colors of nature, with the most renowned color being blue and other basic fancy shades include yellow sapphire, green, red, orange sapphires, colorless-white sapphire, and pink sapphire, including uncountable color combinations from these colors like padparadscha sapphire, teal sapphire, purple sapphire and others. The red colour in corondum is ruby, but species is same.

Sapphire is the second hardest gemstone after diamond and has a hardness rating of 9 on the moh scale.

Sapphire quality vs. price for yellow, blue, pink, and padparadscha sapphires

As with other gemstones, sapphire quality is based on first the basics of colour, clarity, cut, weight, brilliance, etc.

Sapphire stone's transparency, clarity and inclusions

For all gems whose property is to be transparent like ruby, emerald, diamond, tourmaline, etc. their value emerges from how transparent they are other than exceptions like opal.

Clarity with transparency is the primary parameter to judge a gemstone's quality. Blue sapphires usually come with acceptable fine silk, foreign inclusions, color bands (zoning), etc. A fully transparent sapphire with minimum inclusions and crystalline appearance in a good size is rarest and expensive.

Note: any big cloud patch or inclusion in the center and top of the table will make the stone a rejection or will significantly drop the price.

The types of inclusion, the inclusion pattern, and the place where the inclusion is plays a big role in the looking and valuation of the stone. The side light inclusions or inclusions intermingling in the color are more acceptable. Sometimes a color spot in a sapphire of same colour provides more colour to the stone so that is regarded even better to be in. Any big cloud in the stone which checks the transparency and shine degrading the looks of the gem. Suppose if these is a white hard patch or a black inclusion just on the table will degrade the look and value significantly even if the sapphire is fully transparent. Such inclusion can even put the gem in rejection category making over 70%-90% + value drop depending on inclusion type and placement.

Sapphire gemstone color

Color determines the quality of any sapphire and the purest color with no secondary shade in proper saturation is considered top-notch, like a cornflower blue sapphire, which is the ideal and most prestigious color. So is with yellow sapphire, pink sapphire, etc. Medium deep to deep colors are most desired.

Unique natural sapphire's value

Sapphire-like padparadscha is a mix of pink and orange and is very rare and highly priced.

Parti sapphires are those having two or more colors independently and are much mined in Australia; being uncommon, these sapphires remained unknown, having no big demands, and are on an average sold at lower prices than other usual sapphires.

Purple sapphire may be more towards blue or more towards pink. Final look depends on the saturation, brilliance and depth of the color.

Note: very light shade in the stone or a window stone that is catching no color in the middle is cheap; even too dark blue, which is blocking the light and transparency of stone, comes in the semi-precious category.

Brilliance/luster in sapphires

As with other gems, sapphires are also all about shine and luster. A sapphire that is dull and foggy will not attract buyers and will be significantly low priced to those with full transparency and brilliance. Always ensure that any blue, yellow, pink, purple, teal green, white or other sapphires you are buying are transparent and have an adequate amount of shine so that they at least can fall into the category of a precious gemstone; also, luster should be all over the stone; partially cloudy stones are valued less.

Cut quality and shapes in sapphire gemstone

A gem is not a gem unless it is cut and finished from a lapidary stone. A cut with precise proportions and proper shape is necessary to bring out the beauty of the sapphire gemstone

Note: Calibrated size lots, matching pairs, or matching suits (layouts) always have a premium price because manufacturing and matching the same quality in the same size and shape is rarest in sapphires specially if those are fully untreated ones. Arranged mm sizes are required to make jewelry like matching sapphire earrings, tennis bracelets, necklaces, rings, brooch, etc.

Regular accepted shapes like oval, cushion, octagon, pear, round, baguette, heart, princess, etc. are always in demands. But unusual shapes are either made on demand or just to retain the weight of the rough/lapidary stone. So try to stay away from fancy shapes at least for investment purposes.

Sapphire treatments

Any sapphire, if treated to enhance its color and clarity, like heated or fracture-filled sapphires have different prices. Sapphires are heated to improve transparency, color, and shine. It's a man made process and carries the stone away from originality so is the value affected. Fracture filled stones are kind of man made stones and are very cheap. The top labs like GIA or GRS do not even certify those.

Sapphire origin and value

At Jewelfields, we believe that quality comes first. The value of a sapphire, or any gemstone, should be determined primarily by its quality, not simply by its origin. For transparent gemstones such as sapphire, factors such as transparency, clarity, saturated color, shape and cut, brilliance, and overall beauty should be the foundation of value. Origin can add significance when a particular locality is known for producing exceptional stones, but it should never be used to justify a high price for a poor-quality gemstone. Unfortunately, heavily included, cracked, or fractured stones are sometimes sold at inflated prices simply because they carry the name of a prestigious origin.

Cornflower blue and purple sapphire from Kashmir and all the sapphire's from Ceylon are traded at premium per carat price.
